Tidal's tops for National

Midweek Sport - - ON THE NOSE - By STEVE MULLEN

TIDAL BAY will have to lump top weight of 11st 10lb in the Grand National at Aintree on April 6.

Paul Nicholls’ classy chaser should really carry 9lb more but handicapper Phil Smith is allowed to tinker with the weights for chasing’s biggest race.

Nicholls won it with the now retired Neptune Collonges last year but second home Sunnyhill Boy will be back for another go.

His trainer Jonjo O’Neill said: “Sunnyhillboy adapted well last year and if he could do that again and maybe a small bit more, I’d be delighted. He might run at Cheltenham beforehand.”

One trainer who isn’t happy with the weights is Ted Walsh who has a big chance with Seabass.

He said: “I don’t know how Seabass can get over 11st this year if Tidal Bay is rated 171 and my horse is rated 154. Whatever Phil Smith does, he does and I can’t change it. You don’t have to be a mathematician to subtract 54 from 71.

“Seabass will run somewhere in the next three weeks to a month. There is just over seven weeks to Liverpool so I would like to get a run into him.”

NATIONAL ODDS: 8 Prince De Beauchene, 12 On His Own, 16 Colbert Station, Seabass, 20 Cappa Bleu, Join Together, Teaforthree, Sunnyhillboy, 25 The Package, Wyck Hill
