Beeb docu makes locals mad for it
MANCUNIANS are kicking off about a BBC documentary, saying it gives a ‘distorted’ impression of their area.
Around 200 people from Harpurhey, in Gtr Manchester, turned out for a “fiery meeting” to protest about BBC3’s
People Like Us.
The Beeb said the show gave a “warm and at times unflinching look” at life and did not focus on negative stereotypes.
The six-part series follows young people in the area, which was named the most deprived neighbourhood in England in a survey in 2004.
Lisa Walker, who appears in the show with son Dale, 19, said her family felt “gutted” by how they were represented.
Local MP Graham Stringer, said children were being bullied at school because they were from the area and people had pulled out of buying houses there as a result.
