A FOOTIE player suffered a life threatening injury in a freak STOMACH accident during a game.

Defender John O’Donoghue punctured an intestine after colliding with a teammate during his side’s 11-0 defeat in the Carlsberg South West Peninsula league at the weekend.

The Holsworthy FC captain was rushed to a Truro hospital where he underwent a five-hour operation after his injury against Helston Athletic in west Cornwall.

Holsworthy chairman Barry Parrish said: “In all the years I have been in football I have seen some bad injuries but I have never heard of anybody puncturing their intestine. He is lucky to be here.”

John is expected to stay in hospital for the rest of the week while he recovers.
