Pa­tient A agreed to meet her doc­tor at his prac­tice on a Sun­day morn­ing for him to apol­o­gise to her and she con­tin­ued to visit af­ter his morn­ing surg­eries.

She said: “There was a par­tic­u­lar morn­ing where a travel blan­ket was laid on the floor. He asked me to sit on the floor on the rug. We were the only ones there.

“Ob­vi­ously I did as I felt very vul­ner­a­ble be­ing on my own and I didn’t think he was go­ing to re­quest any fur­ther.”

The GP then ar­ranged weekly sex ses­sions at Pa­tient A’s late par­ents’ home, the panel heard.

She said he favoured Thurs­day af­ter­noons be­cause he had time off for ‘study leave’.

The panel heard that Dr Bur­ley be­came an­gry when Pa­tient A’s ter­mi­nally ill hus­band moved into the prop­erty in late 2004 to live out the rest of his days.

She said: “Dr Bur­ley be­came very ag­i­tated be­cause the house was no longer a safe house as such.”

Dr Bur­ley cared for Pa­tient A’s hus­band up un­til his death in April 2005, vis­it­ing him at the house up to four times a day.
