BENOITASSOU-EKOTTO says he had no idea who Paulinho was after Spurs splashed out £17million on the Brazil ace.

The midfielder, 24, dubbed the new Frank Lampard, has 17 caps for Brazil and was also wanted by Real Madrid.

But Tottenham leftback Assou-Ekotto (left) admitted: “I don’t know what he looks like.

“I don’t know him, I don’t follow this kind of news.

“It’s like two or three years ago, Rafael van der Vaart was there in training one day.

“I said hello to him, but I didn’t know he was Rafael van der Vaart.

“I don’t understand people who don’t understand me (not showing an interest in football). Most people don’t go back home with their job and it’s the same for me.”

If he hasn’t got a clue who Paulinho is, then Benny won’t have heard of manager Andre VillasBoas’ latest target Jese.

The Real Madrid B winger was the star of the show for Spain in the Under-20s World Cup and is keen on a £10m move to the Premier League.
