HAMMERS PULL PLUG ON MBOYO
WEST HAM have pulled the plug on swooping for a player who had been jailed for his part in a gang rape.
Hammers chairman David Sullivan halted a move for Belgium international Ilombe Mboyo who 10 years ago served three years of an eight-year sentence behind bars for the attack on a 14-year-old girl.
Now 26, Mboyo seems to have got his life back on track and hit 20 goals for Gent last season.
But West Ham chief Sullivan said after a backlash from Irons fans: “I couldn’t go against the supporters. We wanted their opinions and they seem to have said no.
“We didn’t sign El-Hadji Diouf when the supporters indicated he would not be acceptable to the club. We will not proceed on this occasion either.”
The Hammers have also been dealt a blow in their pursuit of former Chelsea man Salomon Kalou.
The Ivory Coast star said he is staying put at Lille.
Kalou said: “I do not see why I should go for something elsewhere.”
