BFIREI Ross joins Rooney in England squad
ROY HODGSON reckons Wayne Rooney’s Man United return will give England the passion they’ve been missing.
And the Three Lions coach sprang a surprise by naming Ross Barkley (left) in his squad to face Moldova and Ukraine.
Rooney made his first United start of the season in Monday night’s 0-0 draw with Chelsea.
And Hodgson believes the striker is ready to fire England to the World Cup.
“Wayne still has that burning ambition,” he said.
“A fully fit Wayne Rooney is a good asset for his country and for his club.
“I think he has been under real scrutiny since he was about 17 so if anyone is equipped to deal with scrutiny, it is Wayne. That’s the nature of the player – and it came off in spades for Manchester United.”
Hodgson handed debuts to Everton’s Barkley and Tottenham winger Andros Townsend.
And he insists the young stars have not been included simply to make up the numbers.
“We’re giving ourselves a chance to look at players who have a very bright future and can change games as they have shown in the Premier League,” said Hodgson. “I think players like Townsend (left) and Barkley can go on to make a big impact in the team. “They are there on merit – they can help us win our games.”
