Midweek Sport - - NEWS -

A UNIVERSITY student was mauled to death by a black bear while he was out hitchhiking.

Daten Patel, 22, was walking with friends in a woodland area when they were confronted by the 300-pound beast.

When the bear began stalking them, the group scattered in different directions.

Four of the men were able to regroup at the Apshawa Preserve in New Jersey, US, but were unable to find Patel.

Two hours after calling police, the West Milford Search and Rescue team found the missing man’s lifeless body being guarded by the bear.

A spokesman from the local black bear project said: “The animal could have been predisposed to attack but was probably just looking for food.”
