HAIR-RAISING BET A WINNER FOR BEN
LEICESTER keeper Ben Hamer is hoping to be nominated for “Beard of the Year” after winning a bet! The ex-Charlton man (below) boasts remarkable facial hair after going into competition with Ben Alnwick. And he has proved a Foxes hairo of late, keeping two clean sheets in a week filling in for Kasper Schmeichel.
Hamer said: “I will let the outsiders decide if it’s beard of the year.
“I just grew it, it was no fashion statement but started off as a bet.
“I’ve seen pictures of me without a beard and I look like a 12-year-old boy. It makes me look a bit more manly.
“It was a bet with Ben Alnwick, now at Peterborough who was at Charlton. He’s the Newcastle keeper Jak’s brother.
“I stuck with it and his missus got tired of it and told him to get rid of it, so I came out on top!”
Hamer faces more competition on the pitch after Mark Schwarzer was brought in from Chelsea.
But he said: “It does not make me feel bad or good. He’s an experienced goalkeeper and we need cover.”
