Replay was not the plan for Jan

Midweek Sport - - SPORT -

JAN VERTONGHEN admits the last thing Tottenham needed was an FA Cup replay.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side added to their crowded fixture list when they were held to a 1-1 third-round draw by Burnley on Monday night.

That means Spurs will play six games in 21 days at the end of this month.

And after already playing 32 games, the challenge of competing for the Europa League as well as the three domestic trophies is becoming even more daunting.

Centre-back Vertonghen said: “We didn’t want another game, but it’s something we have to cope with.

“The important thing is to go through. It’s just a a shame we couldn’t do it this time as we now have another game.

“I’m struggling to count the games I’ve played recently. But when you’re in the flow, you’re happy to have them.

“We’re in the semi-finals of the Capital One Cup, we’re alive in the Europa League and now we need to think about the next games in the Premier League and fight for our objectives, like qualifying for the Champions League next season.”
