Lambert: £25m will only buy Benteke’s boot
ASTON VILLA boss Paul Lambert insists he would not sell hitman Christian Benteke – even for £25million.
The Belgian ace has yet to get going on his return from injury, but he remains the most likely player to end Villa’s dreadful goal drought.
Lambert’s side have not scored in over eight hours and have managed just 11 goals in 22 Premier League games.
And the under-pressure boss said: “A top, top striker in football now, you are talking 10, 15-plus million pounds.
“Christian has been my biggest signing and now he is probably, on his game, one of the best strikers in Europe.
“But there is no chance we couldn’t fend off a big bid for him.
“Even if it was £25m over three months. That would just be for his left boot, that one.
“Listen, there is no way – and I am pretty sure Randy Lerner will be totally fine.”
Lambert hasn’t been helped by being without broken leg victim Libor Kozak, who has not played since December 2013. PRESSURE: Paul Lambert discuss moving on to ball work. But for the horrific break it was, he is doing well.
“I don’t know if he will play again this season. A lot will depend on his healing, how he is.
“We have to wait and be guided by him and the medical people on how he is doing.
“I knew the situation at the club, I knew we weren’t going to do these sort of things.
“I had to respect Randy’s way and there is no problem – that is the way the club is.
“We are trying to get someone in. But if you look at Jermain Defoe, every manager wants a top-quality player like him.
“But he will be on pretty decent money.”
