MIKE ASH­LEY has been ac­cused of in­sult­ing the Toon Army af­ter putting John Carver in charge for the rest of the sea­son.

Carver has been told to carry on as caretaker boss un­til the sum­mer, when New­cas­tle hope to ap­point a per­ma­nent boss, with Dutch­man Frank de Boer and Derby’s ex-Eng­land man­ager Steve McClaren top of their hit-list. Wor­ried Mag­pies sup­port­ers fear the Ge­ordies could be dragged into a rel­e­ga­tion bat­tle un­less Carver can en­gi­neer a quick turnaround in re­sults.
