Airstrikes kill 45 in Syria

RUS­SIAN airstrikes have killed dozens of peo­ple in a Syr­ian coastal prov­ince, in­clud­ing a rebel com­man­der who for­merly served in Pres­i­dent Bashar As­sad’s army.

Ac­tivists said the airstrikes, which be­gan on Mon­day af­ter­noon and lasted sev­eral hours, also wounded scores, mak­ing it one of the dead­li­est in­ci­dents since Rus­sia be­gan its aerial at­tacks nearly three weeks ago.

Since the airstrikes be­gan, Syr­ian troops and al­lies from Le­banon’s Hezbol­lah mil­i­tant group have launched ground of­fen­sives in north­ern, cen­tral and south­ern Syria as well as in the sub­urbs of the cap­i­tal, Da­m­as­cus, cap­tur­ing ar­eas for­merly held by in­sur­gents.

Rami Ab­dur­rah­man, from the Bri­tain-based Syr­ian Ob­ser­va­tory for Hu­man Rights, said at least 45 peo­ple were killed in the rebel-held Ja­bal al-Akrad re­gion in Latakia prov­ince.
