Fire probe af­ter mum-to-be dies

A HEAV­ILY preg­nant woman has died af­ter a sus­pi­cious tower block fire.

De­tec­tives have launched a mur­der in­ves­ti­ga­tion af­ter the blaze at the block of flats in Bal­moral Road, Southend, on Satur­day night, Es­sex Po­lice said.

The 30-year-old ex­pec­tant lo­cal mother was taken to hos­pi­tal with life-threat­en­ing in­juries and died on Mon­day even­ing.

Po­lice said she was “in the later stages of preg­nancy”.

Four­teen peo­ple, in­clud­ing an eight-weekold baby were evac­u­ated from the ninth floor of the block while fire­fight­ers ex­tin­guished the blaze.

Po­lice said the fire is be­ing treated as sus­pi­cious and of­fi­cers, called to the scene at about 11.15pm, are in­ves­ti­gat­ing the cir­cum­stances lead­ing up to it.
