Gran dies as lad wins medal
A WEIGHTLIFTER’S grandmother collapsed and died as he won the bronze medal in the 56kg category at the Rio Olympics.
Sinphet Kruithong’s gran, Subin Khongthap, was among scores of family and friends watching his event live on a big TV screen set up especially for the occasion in his village in Thailand.
The 82-year-old lady collapsed on Monday and didn’t live to see her grandson win the bronze medal.
Sinphet, 22, was the second Thai to win a medal at the Rio Games, following Sopita Tanasan, also 22, who won a gold medal for weightlifting in the women’s 48kg category on Saturday.
He was, however, the first Thai man to win a medal in weightlifting.
