MPs mock Trump for ‘diplomat Farage’ tip

Midweek Sport - - NEWS -

MPs have mocked Donald Trump’s suggestion that Nigel Farage should be the UK’s ambassador to the United States – and hit back by suggesting Hillary Clinton should be America’s top diplomat in London.

In a highly unusual intervention, the President-elect said in a tweet “many people would like to see @ Nigel_Farage represent Great Britain as their ambassador to the United States. He would do a great job!”

Conservative MP Sir Simon Burns – who is a big supporter of Mrs Clinton – poked fun at the tycoon’s “extremely generous” advice.

Speaking in Foreign Office questions in the Commons, he said: “Although there is no vacancy, would the Foreign Secretary think this is extremely generous of Donald Trump to suggest who should be our ambassador in the United States?

“And in that measure of fraternity, might he suggest that the best person to fill the vacancy of the ambassador to the United Kingdom next year would be Hillary Rodham Clinton?”

Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson slapped down any suggestion that the controversial UKIP leader could be considered for the top job, and praised Britain’s incumbent ambassador, Sir Kim Darroch.

He told Commons: “The House knows full well, we have a first rate ambassador in Washington.”
