FORMER actress Julie Hesmondhalgh has thrown her hat in the ring and declared she wants to be the new Doctor Who.

Julie played transgender character Hayley Cropper on the ITV soap for 16 years, but she’s now set her sights on becoming the Doctor.

Since leaving the famous cobbled street of Corrie, Julie, 46, has appeared on stage and in BBC1 crime drama Happy Valley.

Following that, she’s also bagged the lead role as the victim of a brutal rape in the third series of Broadchurch on ITV.

The Accrington-born actress said she’d love to play the first female lead on Doctor Who but she’d also be happy with any role in the hit sci-fi drama series.

She said: “Doctor Who – I’d love to be in that.

“As the Doctor, that would be something. I wouldn’t mind just being an alien… anything at all.”

Departing Doctor, Peter Capaldi, 58, who was the twelfth doctor to take the reins, said he wants his successor to be female.

Julie’s Broadchurch co-star Olivia Colman has also been tipped for the role of the Time Lord – as has Sheridan Smith, Dame Helen Mirren and Miranda Hart.
