‘Pie bet­ting’ probe Wayne quits in tears

SUT­TON United’s ‘roly poly goalie’ Wayne Shaw has re­signed af­ter the club asked him to quit over the pie-eat­ing bet­ting scan­dal.

Shaw was said to be in tears as the news was bro­ken to him on the day the Gam­bling Com­mis­sion and the Football As­so­ci­a­tion opened in­ves­ti­ga­tions into his ac­tions.

The 23-stone stop­per was caught on cam­era eat­ing a pie dur­ing Mon­day night’s tele­vised FA Cup de­feat by Arse­nal. He has since ad­mit­ted he was aware that a book­ies were of­fer­ing 8-1 on the event oc­cur­ring.

Shaw was seen eat­ing in the 83rd minute af­ter Sut­ton had used all of their subs and it was clear he would not play.

Asked if he knew any­one had backed the bet, Shaw replied: “I think there were a few peo­ple. A few mates and a few of the fans.”
