‘Pie betting’ probe Wayne quits in tears
SUTTON United’s ‘roly poly goalie’ Wayne Shaw has resigned after the club asked him to quit over the pie-eating betting scandal.
Shaw was said to be in tears as the news was broken to him on the day the Gambling Commission and the Football Association opened investigations into his actions.
The 23-stone stopper was caught on camera eating a pie during Monday night’s televised FA Cup defeat by Arsenal. He has since admitted he was aware that a bookies were offering 8-1 on the event occurring.
Shaw was seen eating in the 83rd minute after Sutton had used all of their subs and it was clear he would not play.
Asked if he knew anyone had backed the bet, Shaw replied: “I think there were a few people. A few mates and a few of the fans.”
