Soldier arrested over hit ’n’ run squaddie death
A BRITISH soldier has been arrested in connection with the death of an “exemplary” infantryman who was hit by a car on a UK base.
The Royal Military Police are investigating after Corporal John Fernandez, 32 ( above), of the 2nd Battalion the Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment, was killed while walking in the UK sovereign base area in Dhekelia, southeast Cyprus on Saturday night.
An Army source said the car, which was not a military vehicle, fled the scene.
A spokesman for the MoD said: “We can confirm that Cpl John Fernandez was killed in a road traffic incident on Saturday.
“British Forces Cyprus can confirm that a member of the British military has been arrested in connection to the road traffic incident.”
Cpl Fernandez had recently been nominated for a commendation for his actions during an explosive attack at the base area police station in Dhekelia last month.
