ASOUTHPORT playground has been closed by Sefton Council after being deemed “not fit for purpose’.

The council says that despite repeated maintenance work, the equipment has suffered rapid deterioration in recent months.

The playground, located outside Kew Woods Primary School on Ovington Drive, will now have its equipment permenently removed.

The facilities are regularly used by pupils at the start and end of the school day, as well as by younger children waiting to collect siblings with their parents.

Despite the popularity of the playground, the council’s cabinet has now approved the decision to close it.

A Sefton Council spokesman said: “The playground at Ovington Drive is over 30 years old and while we have tried to sustain it with regular inspections and maintenance, the site has recently seen rapid deterioration.

“As a result we have decided to close the facility and decommission the old equipment, which was done with cabinet approval and ward councillors notified.

“While this is disappointing, the nearest alternative playground site to Ovington Drive can be found at Town Lane which is only a quarter of a mile away. “The Town Lane playground has received substantial investment in the last few years and the equipment there has only recently been re-painted, meaning provision is still available for families to enjoy.”

The decision has been met with dismay from parents who live in the are and an online petition has now been launched to save the playground.

The petition, started by Nat Glennon and signed more than 700 times in its first day, states: “Following the recent news regarding the playground on the Kew Estate being removed, i feel it has upset a lot of people.

“As small as it may be, it brings a lot of joy to a lot of children and I’m sure many will be disappointed to see this go.

“On behalf of my children, I am starting this petition in the hope the council seriously reconsider their decision.”
