So much to be proud of... and a bright future to look forward to
IWAS at an event last week when someone came up to me and simply said: “Southport’s awful, simply awful”.
Awful as in very bad or unpleasant.
Well, I thought, that’s a strange remark to make.
Of course, it’s completely wrong.
We know we’re experiencing the same challenges as other towns in the country.
And, in many ways, it’s tougher for towns like ours that are close to major international cities as we are with Liverpool and Manchester.
But, even so, to describe us as “awful” is simply untrue.
Southport is so much better than that.
A few days earlier we’d received the latest tourism figures for our town.
The numbers that really stood out (visitor numbers, the economic impact, the number of local jobs that are dependent on tourism, and the numbers of visitors staying overnight) were all up.
So clearly all of us involved in promoting everything that’s good about visiting and investing here are doing something right.
Of course, there is a long way to go, but as a town we’re continuing to attract new quality investment, continuing to attract visitors by their millions, and continuing to expand an already packed events programme.
Talking the town down and knocking those who want to improve things simply makes it harder for everyone who wants to bring positive change.
Later this month if you’re out and about in the early hours you’ll start to see the Christmas lights being installed.
We’ve continued to expand the number of streets getting lights this year and brought in new designs.
The great “switch on” is happening on Sunday, November 19.
But before then we’re getting ready to launch our new look Southport Halloween Festival.
We’ve been working hard on developing a new Festival for our town and have come up with some great events that, judging by the comments on social media, have certainly got people talking.
There’s still time to get involved.
Just send us details of anything that you’ve got planned and we’ll include it on our dedicated Festival website www.spookysouthport.com.uk
The Hallowe’en Festival will be coming to Southport this month
