Safer play park to reopen

A PLAY park which was closed for safety reasons will reopen in July with new equipment and safe surfacing.

Labour councillors Catie Page and Nina Killen thanked Sefton Council for ensuring funds were made available for the park at Smithy Green, which was closed last year after a child was injured when a corroded frame collapsed.

Cllr Killen said: “Residents were rightly concerned when this park closed down, fearing the worst due to the financial position of the council.

“We didn’t want to see this facility lost. It’s great news that the money has been found to replace the park equipment.

“I know from when I had small children, a lower-scale park like this one can be a godsend compared to larger parks like Duke Street, which is a fabulous facility but difficult for very young children to navigate.”

Cllr Page added: “As soon as the park closed we were working with our Labour colleagues in the council cabinet to ensure that Formby retained this facility.”
