It’s great – I can have a few drinks after the show

AUDIENCES are in for a ‘Result’ at this year’s comedy festival as Jimeoin returns to Southport to kick off his UK tour.

Jimeoin last appeared in town two years ago, and is looking forward to his latest appearance at the festival.

He said: “Festivals in general are a bit more open to getting an audience.

“If there’s no festival they’re going to see you, but at a festival they’re trusting the organiser’s decisions.

“I did the festival two years ago, I remember sunsets over the pier and staying above the place I was playing at.

“That was great, I usually have to drive, so I could have a few drinks after the show!”

The festival is the first night of the Irish comic’s UK tour, but this is simply another night of continuous showmanship for a man who tries to perform as much as possible.

“I’m in Australia at the moment, I’m doing Tasmania, then Darwin, there’s never a start or a stop to my shows.

“I find it hard to do a gig after a bit of time off, you can’t practice stand up, there’s no substitute, if you take time off you’re not ‘match fit’ as they say.

“I took three months off early in my career and the first night back was awful.

“There was a big difference in the second night from the first.”

Jimeoin’s show, called ‘Result’ in reference to one of his most famous jokes about drunken cooking, has been two years in the making whilst still performing previous material. “It’s taken two years to write the show, I’ve not been to any of the places I’m playing in the last two years.” Those two years have been spent mostly in Australia, where Jimeoin now lives. “I’ve been living here for 30 years, I came over on a year’s working visa but I knew the day I arrived here I wanted to stay,’’ he explained. “I was working in construction, and I’d just spent a winter in London. “This was before global warming, the steel was sticking to my hands – it was that cold. “I started doing stand-up here, I’d never really seen it before but I like the concept of jokes, the ability to tell a story. “Everyone in my family has the ability was capable of telling jokes, so it came fairly natural.” Jimeoin, Result! is at the Ramada Plaza Hotel, Promenade, Southport, on Wednesday, October 10. Tickets priced £16.50 are available direct from the venue or visit: www. southportcomedyfestival.com SEE panel below for further details of the line-up for this year’s Southport Comedy Festival.
