Olympic star Dan to open new supermarket
ANEW Aldi supermarket will be officially opened in Southport this week by Olympic medallist Dan Purvis.
The discount supermarket will open on Liverpool Road, in Birkdale, on the former site of the Birkdale Trading Estate, and will be the town’s second Aldi.
The opening takes place this Thursday and the first 30 customers will be given complementary bags full of fresh fruit and vegetables.
Gymnast Daniel, who won a bronze medal at the 2012 Olympics and claimed gold at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, will officially cut the ribbon to declare the store open at 8am.
After the opening, Daniel will pay a visit to Birkdale Primary School to deliver an inspirational assembly about his gymnastics career to date and the importance of living a healthy lifestyle.
Daniel, who lives in Southport and trains at Southport Gymnastics Club, in Ainsdale, said: “I’m really looking forward to opening morning. It’s a great feeling to give back to a community that’s so close to my heart.
“I hope I can inspire customers to stay active and maintain a healthy, balanced diet.
“With so much fresh produce on offer at Aldi Birkdale, it’s really easy to do so.”
Speaking ahead of the opening, store manager Linzi Liggat said: “Having a local hero with us to celebrate our grand opening is so special. It’s not every day you get to meet an Olympic athlete, so I’m sure our shoppers will be delighted to meet Daniel.
“We’ve got some fantastic opening week Specialbuys on offer, as well as some excellent prices on fresh, British produce, so we look forward to opening our doors to everyone on Thursday.”
The new Birkdale store, which has created 38 jobs, will feature Aldi’s exclusive Specially Selected range and twiceweekly Specialbuys.
