We must grind out a result now – Watson
MANAGER Liam Watson says Southport must grind out a result as they look to bounce back when they play Curzon Ashton at home tonight.
The Sandgrounders were beaten by Blyth Spartans on Saturday as their difficult start to the Vanarama National League North campaign continued.
Southport were made to pay for a number of missed chances and Watson says his players must roll up their sleeves in order to get a result to help lift themselves out of trouble.
“We’ve created numerous chances which we haven’t taken and we’ve been done when a corner has gone directly into the net,” Watson said.
“The result has left me numb. We’re our own worst enemy and to concede a goal like that is so poor because it’s schoolboy stuff.
“A minute before that, Dion Charles has gone clean through, he doesn’t hit the target, and once they score we are chasing it.
“Jason Gilchrist has worked hard and he’ll go in the team now.
“He had another chance at the end when he’s done the right thing by trying to pass it in but has dragged it wide. Hopefully the goals will start coming from him.
“The players need to realise we’re in a proper battle now. You’d like to see a little bit more endeavour, players winning their own battles, but the simple thing is that we should be winning games like this and we haven’t done.
“It’s alright winning cup games, but we’ve got to stabilise ourselves at this level and at the moment it is difficult for us.
“I’ve said consistently that we do create chances but we don’t take them and we’ve got to grind out a result.”
This evening’s match at the Merseyrail Community Stadium kicks-off at 7.45pm and full details of the game will be in Thursday’s
Dion Charles was out of luck for Southport as they went down to defeat to Blyth Spartans last Saturday.
