Solder: too much or too little?
This is far too much solder on the tip and will cause twofold problems; firstly, it will stall your progress by depositing a big lump of solder on the job, which will then need to be cleaned up with a file - which is the second bugbear. Adding solder a little bit at a time cuts down on the cleaning up.
Don’t take the solder to the iron. Instead, touch the iron against the solder to leave a small blob on the tip. In theory, this is enough to solder two bits of brass together. If you do need more solder, repeat the process.
