Layout spotlight

‘Hedon’ Dennis Cannon, West Yorkshire

Model Rail (UK) - - The Club Room -

This is ‘Hedon’, my ‘OO’ gauge layout inspired by the railways of Hull, as they were in the 1950s. Hedon, to the east of Hull, never had a High Level railway, but I built it to serve the dual purpose of hiding the semi-circular end of the layout and also to represent the elevated tracks that carried The Hull and Barnsley Railway. The layout includes chalk hoppers and cement wagons because there was a chalk quarry at Hessle, on the west side of Hull, that provided raw materials for Earle’s cement factory (on the east side of the town). To mimic the extensive docks and the vessels that used it, I’ve made use of the ship on one of Peco’s backscenes too.

The ship from Peco’s Dock Centre backscene (SK-20), makes for a stunning dockside backdrop.

A central cut-out provides easy access during maintenance - not to mention a fantastic viewpoint during operation!
