Bobby Darin & Johnny Mercer

Two Of A Kind

- Fred Dellar

OMNIVORE. CD/DL A humour-packed song classic now with bonus tracks. Sometime in 1961, Johnny Mercer, one of the finest lyricists ever to grace the world of popular music, opted to party with the multi-talented Darin. Hauling arranger Billy May into the melee proved an inspired move. May always possessed a sense of fun, from scoring Tweety Pie to his bouncing scores for Frank Sinatra. All that was needed was a bundle of songs that could keep the party going. So the duo headed back mainly to songsheets of the ’20s and ’30s, hokey items that included Who Takes Care Of The Caretaker’s Daughter and Paddlin’ Madelin’ Home. They made them to swing, while indulging in repartee at every turn, adding a modicum of Darin’s impressions and, in the case of Indiana, even a touch of scat unison. The result was – and remains – a warm, funfilled, timeless reminder of two great talents.
