BUILTH WELLS: NICKY GRIST STAGES July 9/10
When you ask British rally fans about their favourite events, the 1980s edition of the Welsh International Rally is always close to the top.
The mixture of Welsh gravel and Epynt asphalt, together with Group B machines, created one of the best events on the British Rally Championship calendar, attracting competitors from all over the world.
In 2016, the BRC wants to return to something similar with the addition of the Nicky Grist Stages. Previously known as the Quinton, for some years the event has run on a Saturday as a gravel rally and part of the BTRDA Rally Championship, but now it will share championships and the BRC will use the Epynt Ranges on Sunday. With R5 cars at the front, there’s also the chance of the odd international entry. And with Max Vatanen confirmed in an R5 – the Vatanen name will bring another subtle link to the 1980s event back to the present day.
While the route is yet to be confirmed, get yourself to Halfway on Saturday before standing anywhere on the military ranges on Sunday. It’s all dramatic viewing up there.
