It is rare that one person lasts more than four decades in motorsport, and even more scarce that the majority of that is spent with one team or outfit.
But then Tyler Alexander is a rare man, as pointed out by Bernie Ecclestone in his foreword to this mighty tome.
Alexander has been at the very epicentre of Mclaren through its formative stages right up to 2009. His recall is impressive, but it is the smaller detail that is the most interesting of all.
There is coverage of the mechanical developments at Mclaren alongside personal stories and revealing insights. Talking of the highly successful (first) partnership with Honda, Alexander says: “There were a few people at Mclaren who didn’t get on with the Honda people.”
It is little snippets like that which just encourage you to read on. And as for the observations on Nigel Mansell…
There are also comments from some of the biggest names in the sport, from Mario Andretti to Jackie Stewart, which break up the narrative and add insight. MJ
