Chan­nel 5’s cov­er­age of the World Rally Cham­pi­onship looks to have been an in­stant hit, with twice the num­ber of peo­ple watch­ing than last sea­son. More than 1.1 mil­lion peo­ple tuned in at some point dur­ing the Rally Swe­den pro­gramme, while the av­er­age au­di­ence of 510,000 is more than dou­ble the 250,000 man­aged by ITV4 last sea­son. This is a big step for­ward from three years ago, when there was no Bri­tish TV deal in place at all for the start of the WRC sea­son… Next week’s Rally Mex­ico will start with 30 en­tries for the se­cond year in suc­ces­sion. Lo­cal hero Ben­ito Guerra makes the list in a Ford Fi­esta RS WRC, while Martin Prokop en­ters his first WRC round of the sea­son in a sim­i­lar car. Ten WRC2 crews are in­cluded – with de­fend­ing cham­pion Nasser Al-attiyah mak­ing his first ap­pear­ance of the year. Michel Fabre is the sole WRC3 en­try, as he was last time out in Swe­den… The post­poned Euro­pean Rally Cham­pi­onship opener Rally Liepaja will now run on Septem­ber 16-18.
