Opel Adam Cup Car to make UK rally debut at Donington Park event
The Opel Rallye Cup car will make its national rallying debut in the UK in the hands of Fred Field next month.
Field – son of Motorsport News Circuit Rally Championship leader Ashley – hasn’t competed in the drivers seat before but is hoping the outing will lead to more.
“I’ve wanted to get driving forever really,” said Field. “The opportunity has arisen so we’re going to do it.
“We’re doing Donington on March 6, then Anglesey and Cadwell in the MN Circuit Rally Championship,” said the 22-yearold. “After that I want to do some bigger rallies so we’ll do Manx National, and the ALMC in Ireland. After that we’ll do the last two asphalt rounds of the BRC, the Ulster and Isle of Man.”
Field Jr has co-driven for Ashley in the MN championship in his lightweight Darrian T90 GTR+, and will use the Opel, which is similar to the firm’s R2-spec car but has different non-homologated parts. Field will look at his options for further competition in 2017.
“We have plenty of options for next year, one of which is we’re looking at making a gravel kit for the car,” explained Field. “If we can get that to work then BRC is an option, or we could potentially get an R2 car and do Junior BRC, or even go to Germany and do the Opel Adam Cup if it’s still going. We have plenty of options.”
