Ka­je­tanow­icz’s ti­tle de­fence be­gins

Euro­pean Rally cham­pion Ka­je­tan Ka­je­tanow­icz be­gins his ti­tle de­fence at this week’s Ca­nary Is­lands Rally.

The Span­ish event forms the open­ing round of the se­ries af­ter Rally Liepaja was post­poned due to a lack of snow last month. The Lat­vian event now runs in Septem­ber.

Ka­je­tanow­icz will face op­po­si­tion on the is­land from M-sport World Rally Team star Mads Ost­berg, who starts an ERC event for the first time in a Ford Fi­esta R5. But for the rest of the year it will be the likes of fel­low Fi­esta driver Alexey Lukyanuk and David Botka (DS 3 R5) who will pose the great­est threat to the Pole’s back-to-back ti­tle as­pi­ra­tions.

In­gram driv­ing an Opel Adam – starts with the Cir­cuit of Ire­land in April and runs on five more rounds: Azores, Ypres, Es­to­nia, Zlin and Liepaja.

The Ca­nary Is­lands Rally – back af­ter a two-year ab­sence – in­cludes some of the most chal­leng­ing moun­tain­ous stages in Europe. Af­ter a qual­i­fy­ing stage on Thurs­day, the crews face 13 tests and 133 com­pet­i­tive miles on Fri­day and Satur­day.
