Being quickest out of the blocks proved a winning formula for Steve and Yvonne Furzeland. The Subaru Impreza WRC pairing set fastest time on the opening three stages and dominated day one of the two-day event.
With a gap established they were able to withstand increasing pressure from their rivals on the second day to beat Gary Le Coadou/carl Sorenson (Toyota Corolla WRC) by 1m03s. Kevin Tappin/jamie Vaughan (Ford Escort Mk2) finished third.
The Dorset venue traditionally rewards brave but tidy driving and, from stage one, Furzeland combined these assets with his WRC machine’s prodigious power effectively. By mid-afternoon he had a 19s lead which he extended to 48s by the end of day one.
