Reign­ing Ir­ish Tar­mac and Na­tional cham­pion Don­agh Kelly took a start-tofin­ish vic­tory in his Ford Fo­cus WRC on his first event in the cham­pi­onship this year, achiev­ing three wins in a row in West Cork – the first per­son to do so in the rally’s his­tory.

There were eight stages on day one, four loops of two.

The open­ing two tests, Inchy­bridge and Bal­li­nascarty, fea­tured bright skies but damp slippy roads. Kelly picked slick Miche­lin tyres for his Fo­cus WRC and was im­me­di­ately fastest, notch­ing up a 14s ad­van­tage over Garry Jen­nings (on Kumhos) by first ser­vice at the agri­cul­tural cot­tage out­side Clon­akilty. Alas­tair Fisher was third and Keith Cronin fourth. Rory Kennedy was en­tered to sit with Jen­nings, but fam­ily is­sues meant Rory had to head back home to Done­gal, so David Moynihan
