Brands Hatch told us a few things about BTCC 2016
As expected, the season-opening Brands Hatch British Touring Car rounds gave us some hints as to the battles to come in 2016. We will see some good racing for individual race wins, but for the title, Honda is indeed the team to beat.
It’s also fair to say a Subaru driver will not win the crown this season. The Levorg may well become a force and challenge in 2017, but given where the cars were at Brands it would take a miracle for Colin Turkington or Jason Plato to have a chance this year. Turks is already 39 points behind leader Matt Neal, a big gap even if he was in a fully-sorted car.
For me, Turkington was one of the stars of the weekend. His qualifying lap – good enough for 11th – was probably the best of all, and he generally had the edge over Plato, even if the results didn’t reflect that. It will be fascinating to see how that dynamic develops as the car gets better.
The feel-good story, though, was a first win for Tom Ingram and Speedworks. Nice guys do win. Kevin Turner, Editor
