Paddon destroys Otago opposition in i20
Hayden Paddon gave his all-new Hyundai i20 the perfect debut with a nine-minute win on last weekend’s Otago Rally in New Zealand.
The Hyundai Motorsport driver has developed the new car as a cost-effective alternative for rallying in his native New Zealand and FIA regional Asia Pacific Rally Championship.
Otago was the first outing for the car, which will run to AP4 regulations once the team has completed the build of a 1600cc engine rather than 1800cc.
Paddon said: “If anything, it probably exceeded my expectations. The base of the car is very good. Our team worked very long hours coming up to the rally getting the car ready, and even right up to shakedown we were having problems so they were able to get on top on those right before the start of the rally, which was great.”
Paddon returns to his i20 WRC in time for next week’s Rally Argentina, before heading back south for the Rally of Whangarei in his Nz-spec Hyundai.
