Yates and Woodburn push Fiesta over finish
Rhys Yates and Tom Woodburn were almost ruled out of the Circuit of Ireland Rally after an alternator belt broke as they reached the ceremonial finish.
To claim their provisional 15th place overall and sixth in the British Rally Championship order, they had to reach parc ferme after the finish ceremony. The duo pushed the car across the finish ramp to the applause of spectators.
“After service we got a warning light: we had put a bit of tape on a vent so I thought it was that,” said Yates. “When we opened the bonnet it was the belt. If it would have happened on the stage that would have been it and it would have been a right kick in the teeth,” he added.
The Chesterfield driver was making his asphalt rally debut after a year in the BTRDA last year, with the plan to finish.
He set top five times on the BRC opener in Mid Wales, but slid into a bank and was denied help from spectators by marshals.
