DOWN THE WITH NEIL WILLIAMS

Motor Sport News - - Historics -

He’s been rallying for over 20 years “I started doing road rallies in 1992 and won a couple of events and then moved on to single-venue stage rallies. I started doing Irish events in 2005 and did that for seven or eight years, with some good results in a modified Ford Escort.”

It’s a family affair “My dad Corbett has always rallied and he’s still doing events in a Mk2 Escort with a Millington engine. That’s where the bug has come from for me. I had a modified Escort with all the gizmos and sequential ’box and it was a fantastic bit of kit to drive but the goalposts were always moving on.”

Historics appealed “I wanted to stay with Escorts and in historics you’ve got one goal and the playing field is pretty much level. We started doing historics from 2011 and 2012 onwards. It’s been getting better and we’re now getting to a reasonable pace up against the top historic boys.”

He’s still new to gravel “Asphalt is where my first love is really, and we’ve only been on gravel since the end of 2012. So we’ve probably only done 10 gravel rallies in total. I’m really enjoying the challenge of doing gravel. I like to set myself a challenge and gravel is very challenging for an asphalt driver.”

Thewelsh title is a prime aim “This year we’ve registered for the Welsh Historic Championship, which is virtually all asphalt, and we’re doing some British Historic Rally Championship rounds as well. The Welsh ties in better for me as it’s a family business and we’ve got to be there most of the time. Rallying more than two or three hours from home is difficult.”

He is moving forward “My ultimate aim would be to finish top three in the historics. Top 10 is where I like to be most of the time now on gravel. On historic asphalt events we’re there to win and hopefully be as quick as anyone. I’d like to do some of the bigger events and maybe go to Belgium for some historic events. We run a 4x4 business, selling new and used vehicles. I watch a bit of rugby but I don’t play anymore. But motorsport is the big thing.”
