Coffs Harbour withdraws Oz funding
Funding for this year’s Rally Australia has been withdrawn from the host city of Coffs Harbour.
The bombshell came late last week at what was expected to be a straightforward funding meeting for the council. Ultimately, the vote went four-two against Coffs providing finance for Australia’s round of the World Rally Championship.
Councillor Sally Townley outlined the issue, saying: “We were being asked to approve the general manager to execute a deal between the council and Rally Australia Pty Ltd, of which he is a board member. Our general manager holds an executive role in both organisations, so I find the transfer of money between those organisations creates a conflict.”
Councillor Keith Rhoades was stunned by the outcome, saying: “I was just shellshocked at their decision. None of those four councillors realise the ramifications to our local economy.”
The event has an agreement with WRC Promoter until the end of 2017.
Nobody from the organisation was available for comment when MN contacted them on Monday.
