Barlow has tough debut in Somerset
Junior 1000 champion Charlie Barlow’s gravel rally debut was nearly halted last week as an engine blew in a pre-event test.
He was testing with his Red-run Nissan Micra when the engine forced a rod out of the block.
However, after some hard work by RED and Barlow’s father Brian, a road car engine was sourced and the youngster could make his debut with Osian Pryce’s regular co-driver Dale Furness, who will sit with him for most events this year.
“We went testing to Higgins Rally School on Wednesday, being my first time out on gravel,” said Barlow. “The test went really well and I gained confidence quickly but unfortunately the engine went.
“I’d like to thank all at RED for managing to source and fit an engine to get us out on the rally on Saturday.”
Barlow had been running 54th in the 1400S class using a near-standard road engine before he developed a misfire on SS10. He eventually finished 57th.
