Red Bull speed comes as a surprise for Mercedes

World championship leader Nico Rosberg says he’s been surprised by the pace of Red Bull this season, and insists the team must be taken seriously as a title threat.

Mercedes racer Rosberg has won the first three races of the season, but was pushed hard in China by Daniel Ricciardo’s Red Bull in the early stages before the Australian picked up a puncture.

Rosberg said the upswing in form from the Milton Keynes team had caught his attention: “Red Bull was a surprise. They were close in qualifying and in the race, although we see Ferrari [as being] right on us whereas Red Bull were still about half a second away in qualifying. But Red Bull made a big step, which is a surprise as they don’t have as much engine power as we do, so they are a force to be reckoned with.”

Mercedes head Toto Wolff said: “Red Bull’s pace is strong. It would be good if they bounced back.”
