New VW Golf Mk7 starts its first race
Tin-top champion Tom Witts will handle the first race-spec Mk7 Volkswagen Golf in this year’s Volkswagen Racing Cup after giving the car a shakedown at Donington Park last weekend.
Witts, who won the Production GTI title last season, entered the Maximum Motorsport-run car into last weekend’s VAG Trophy races before the VW Cup begins at Rockingham this weekend. He took a best finish of seventh.
“The new car is a bit different,” said Witts. “It’s basically a Scirocco underneath the skin so it’s built on a proven platform. We’ve had a few technical issues. We had an anti-rollbar break in qualifying and a few gearbox issues with gear selection, but that’s normal for a new car.
“It looks great and has a lot of potential. The organisers want to move the VW Cup forward so it was natural to try the Mk7.”
