Volkswagen misses out on record win run
Hyundai’s victory in Argentina last week means Volkswagen must wait at least another year to attempt to score a perfect year.
The Polo R WRC was on the verge of winning every rally for the last year ahead of the South American event, but Hayden Paddon’s success spoiled a party for the reigning world champion team.
Volkswagen team principal Jost Capito remained pragmatic about the result, saying: “It never feels good not to win, but, with this sport, you always know there comes a rally where you don’t win. It’s not a given that we always win. But, we have two cars on the podium and this is quite a good achievement too.”
Asked if this loss hurt more with the perfect year waiting, Mclaren-bound Capito said: “My successor can have the perfect year!”
Paddon’s win means Argentina remains the only current WRC round Sebastien Ogier hasn’t won.
