EVANS CLOSING ON WRC RETURN
Welshman could be in a Fiesta WRC before season end
Elfyn Evans’ return to a World Rally Car looks to be getting closer with confirmation of a WRC2 programme weighted towards the first half of the season.
Evans participated in his third WRC2 round of the season in Argentina last week ( see report, page 24) and will contest three of the next four world championship rounds in an effort to sew up the WRC2 title as soon as possible.
The Welshman will compete in Portugal, Poland and Finland, leaving one more scoring opportunity to be decided.
M-sport’s Rich Millener, who was deputising for Malcolm Wilson in South America, told MN: “We’ll see where we’re at once we get to Finland, Malcolm will then decide if Elfyn stays in WRC2 or if he moves back to a World Rally Car. We want to keep Elfyn competing as much as possible and the goal is, obviously, the WRC2 title. If we could get that sorted then it opens up other opportunities in the second half of the year.”
Wilson has already talked about bringing Evans back into a Fiesta RS WRC for some asphalt action, following his second place in Corsica last season.
“That’s still being looked at,” said Millener. “Especially after the pace Elfyn showed on the Circuit of Ireland recently. The only problem we have is the clash between Germany and the Ulster Rally. I guess we take a look at Elfyn’s progress in the [BRC and WRC2] series.
“There’s Rally GB later in the year as well, which is another opportunity for Elfyn [in a WRC], but as a team we have to weigh all of this up with the additional costs involved in running a third Fiesta RS WRC in addition to Mads [Ostberg] and Eric [Camilli] when we’re looking to direct investment into the 2017 car. But it goes without saying, Elfyn’s keen to be back in a World Rally Car!”
