The Circuit of Ireland has become one of the world’s most watched rallies, courtesy of its live internet streaming.

The Belfast-based rally showed live coverage for the two main days of competition and has been rewarded with 100,000 fans tuning in around the world in more than 130 countries.

Event director Bobby Willis made a significant personal investment to underwrite the live streaming and is delighted with the results.

Willis said: “Streaming was something that I pushed hard to do, and I really believe that it’s the future of rallying. No one else has attempted this, partly because of the costs involved but also because of the logistics. It was a huge undertaking and the backroom team who made it happen were all local people.

“It was fantastic to show off Northern Ireland like this, not just our beautiful scenery and the rally’s demanding special stages, but to be able to do it with a team of homebased IT specialists is a measure of the talented people we have here. I think we have raised the bar to new heights in the coverage of rallying.”

Craig Breen and Scott Martin won the event in a Citroen DS 3 R5.
