Championship success story
Despite being spawned from a meeting at Beaconsfield Services, the Motorsport News Circuit Rally Championship has been an astronomical hit with crews this year.
Before 2015 there wasn’t a dedicated championship for circuit rallying on a large scale. But as is the issue with all new championships, did that mean one was needed? Was it filling a gap in the market that wasn’t actually there?
An astounding entry at the opening round was filled with WR Cars and a very special R5 entry of Neil Simpson’s Skoda Fabia R5, but the brilliant Neil Howard Stages event always attracts a strong and top-heavy entry. The real test for the championship came at Anglesey, which ran with just over 30 entries in 2014. This year it maxed out the entry, in part thanks to the MN Circuit crews.
Plans are afoot next year to improve the series, which has been such a hit that the organising crew have struggled to keep up at points. But with a strong TV package and with backing from the hands-on Michelin, the series has delivered more than anyone could have hoped in year one. Let’s hope that ’16/17 brings even more winter rallying fun.
