WILKS GETS UK WORLD RX DEAL
Former British Rally champ lines up drive with OMSE
Two-time British Rally champion Guy Wilks is set to race at his home round of the FIA World Rallycross Championship at Lydden Hill next month, driving an Olsbergsmse-run Ford Fiesta Supercar.
Wilks made his rallycross debut at the same event last season, driving a Mini RX for the JRM Racing team. He qualified for the final but picked up a puncture.
“I’m massively looking forward to getting back out there at Lydden,” said Wilks. “To get another chance to show what I can do will be a great opportunity and racing on the track is where I want to be. Being a British driver in a British round with home support is always special. But, when it is World RX, for me right now it doesn’t get any better. Obviously rallying is my background, so I’ll have to brush up on my racecraft.”
Wilks also raced at the French round of World RX in Loheac last season, but was ruled out by engine dramas.
Olsbergsmse claimed the World RX teams’ championship title in 2014, and has won events in both years of World RX so far. Andreas Bakkerud won the Lydden Hill event in 2014 driving an OMSE Fiesta, joined on the podium by one-off team-mate Andrew Jordan.
“I’ve known Andreas Eriksson [OMSE team owner] for a long time and we’ve kept in touch,” said Wilks. “The Fiesta is one of the best-sorted packages. The team knows exactly what the car is capable of and how to extract the best out of it in all conditions. Hopefully I’ll get a short test before Lydden but I’ll have to rely on the team and Andreas to get the best set-up as quick as possible.
“I’ll need to bring my A-game to Kent if I want to reach the top.”
While the Lydden event is currently a one-off, Wilks hopes it will lead to more: “We just need to do the best job with what we have, and at the moment we have Lydden only. We’ll see what comes after that but if we do a good job I think there is the chance of more.”
