Nigel Green scored his third BRISCA F1 final win last Saturday at Northampton – but his first one on Tarmac. Green, who was known for his prowess on Tarmac in his F2 days, picked up his two previous wins on the shale at Belle Vue and Coventry last season.
Murray Jones opened up a lead of a few car lengths early on. Further back, Mat Newson had forced his way through the pack. Quickly, Jones’ lead was negated when the yellows were shown when Mickey Randell rolled his car. On the restart, Green barged Newson wide and a lap later grabbed the lead from Jones, which he kept for the remainder of the race.
“I got held up in traffic at the start and lost a bit of ground, but my tyres started coming good towards the end of the race and I was able to get into a rhythm which allowed me to open a bit of a lead over Newson. We have been working on the set-up all season and tonight was the first time it felt real good,” said Green.
Second placed Newson said afterwards: “It’s good to get a podium place. I have been going well all season, but there are so many quick lower graders it is hard to catch them. I got a good start and passed Green early on, but when he nudged me wide I couldn’t get back on him quick enough and he was gone.”
On Sunday at Buxton, Todd Jones led virtually from start to finish to record his first F1 final win in only his ninth meeting. Jones mastered the track, which had been left greasy from a rain shower shortly before. “I had some bad luck last night at Northampton, but this makes up for it,” he said. “That’s racing, a lot of highs and lows. I was lucky to be starting near the front and was able to keep it steady and stay out in front.”
Green and Newson rounded out the podium places.
