British GT bosses recruit Michael Vergers to bring racing experience to the stewards’ room
British GT drivers have welcomed the addition of veteran sportscar racer Michael Vergers to the championship as driver steward.
Dutchman Vergers will attend all rounds of the championship this year and act as an advisor to the stewards on all cases of driving offences. It is the latest measure taken by series organiser SRO to stamp out poor driving standards.
Reigning champion Jonathan Adam said: “Having Michael in the stewards’ room is great. The stewards do a hard job and it’s often made even harder by them not being racing drivers themselves. If you go to the stewards’ room at Blancpain [GT Series] they have a team of people for judicials.
“Having somebody as experienced as Michael brings a different view as he understands the variables of racing incidents. It makes you feel more secure as a driver knowing he’s there.”
Vergers said: “Stewards traditionally only see black or white in cases, whereas I can understand the grey areas. It’s a privilege to be involved with British GT as it is a great championship.”
